Margaret Melver Dakan - "Sis"
Margaret Kathryn Melver was born in Seattle on December 8, 1915, along with her twin brother,
Roald. They were called "Sis" and "Bro" throughout their lives. Her parents were Norwegian
immigrants Bernt and Astrid Melver, and the twins joined sisters Alvhild and Solveig. She
attended West Woodland Elementary School and graduated from Ballard High School in 1934.
She attended Pacific Lutheran College and received a three-year teaching certificate in 1938. She
then taught in Manchester, WA, and in Seattle before returning to PLC for her degree in 1942.
She taught school in Germany, among other places. She met Navy pilot Bill Dakan, and they
married in 1954. They lived in San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano, California and Sis taught
school there for over 30 years. Bill died in 1985. In 1991 Sis moved to Edmonds, WA to live
near her sister Alvhild, and they enjoyed many times of travel together. Margaret died on August
9, 2018. Her last words were "Every day is a new beginning."
Sis was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, and husband, and is survived by her nephews
and niece, Ronald Melver (Carol), Greenbank; Nancy Winder (Larry Howard), Seattle; John
Melver (Julie), Renton; Paul Nelson, Seattle; 4 great nephews, 5 great nieces; 20 great-great
nephews and nieces; and cousins in the US, Canada, Norway, and Majorca; many friends,
particularly Jane Cimolino; and her beloved cat, Missy. Special thanks go to her wonderful
caregivers from With a Little Help, Inc., especially Greg Hartman and Louie Joson, and the staff
of Kaiser Permanente Hospice.
All are welcome at a graveside service on Tuesday August 21, 11 a.m., at Pacific Lutheran
Cemetery in Washelli. A reception will follow at Evergreen Washelli Funeral Home.
Memorials may be given to Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church, 7500 Greenwood Ave. N., Seattle, 98103.
