Richard David Shelton

November 30, 1922 - October 30, 2012

Richard D. Shelton was born in Toledo, OR in 1922 and passed away October 30, 2012 in Edmonds, WA. His parents were Anderson and Frances Shelton. In 1924 they moved to Lake Stevens, WA. And a couple of years later moved to Capitol Hill in Seattle. He attended Interlake and Lowell Elementary, Hamilton Jr. High and graduated from Broadway High School. At Broadway he ran track and played football.

He joined the US Navy in 1940 and was stationed at Indian Island, WA when WWII started. He was sent to Pearl Harbor and was on a relief crew for submarines and sub tenders. He served on the USS Silversides and USS Guardfish. He qualified on the Submarines in April 1952 on the USS Besugo in Honolulu. He served on submarines in WWII, Korean War and the Viet Nam War. He also served on the USS Pargo, and USS Segundo. He was an instructor on the USS Puffer. He ended his Navy career in 1966 as Chief Engineman aboard the USS Charr. He was a member of the Submarine Veteran's of WWII Lockwood Chapter in Washington and served as Regional Director 1987-1988. He also was a member of United States Submarine Veterans Inc. and the American Legion, Mineral Branch.

He married Doris in 1945 in Seattle and they were married for 60 years before her passing in 2006. They have 4 children, Sandra (Ed), Steve (Julie), Stu, and Stan. They also have 5 Grandchildren, James, Alex, Andrew, Carter and Rachel.

They lived in Magnolia for most of their marriage, except for 2 years based at Swan Island in Portland, OR and in San Diego 1962-1966. After his Navy career he was employed with Metro Waste Water Treatment as a Treatment Operator. He retired in 1982.

In 1990 he and Doris retired full time to their home in Port Ludlow, WA. They were members of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Chimacum. When Doris passed away in 2006, Richard moved to Edmonds Landing Assisted Living. He enjoyed the attentive staff and had many friends there. He loved the social activities, especially the movies, "Happy Hour" and singing along to the piano player.

In September he attended his 70th reunion from Broadway High.

Funeral Information

Memorial service on Saturday, November 17, 2012 at 12:00pm in the Evergreen Washelli Chapel. Inurnment following.
