Cleo was born in Buckley, WA to Raymond and Gertrude (Knapp) Hathaway. He married Vera Lou Hallin of Snoqualmie, WA in 1948.
Cleo graduated from Ballard High School in 1943. During WWII, he worked in a rigging loft in Ballard, and served on an Army Transport tug in the South Pacific. After the war, he opened Ray’s Frame shop with his father and brother. He entered the Seattle Fire Department in 1952 serving there until his retirement in 1977 as a Deputy Chief. He worked with the State Fire Training Office and facilitated the building of the Fire Training Academy in North Bend.
He is survived by his wife Vera; daughter Gail (Douglas) Wickre and son-in-law Andrew Bender; 6 grandchildren: Philip Weiss, Daniel Weiss (Brenda), Elaine Collins (Brian), Joe Bender (Sara), Laura Kuperstein (Chris), and Sarah Wickre; 2 great grandsons: Victor Weiss and Nicholas Collins, 2 nieces and 2 nephews.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Dorinda Weiss Bender, son-in-law George Weiss, his brothers Russell and Gerald and grandson Matthew Bender.
He was active in the Ballard Elks, and Doric Lodge #92 F&AM, as well as several other fraternal and retired firefighter organizations.

Funeral Information

A service will be held at Evergreen Washelli, 11111 Aurora Ave. N at 2 pm Mon. March 8, and a reception following at the Ballard Elks 6411 Shilshole Ave. NW
