Masako MurakamiOctober 22, 1919 - January 29, 2010 In loving memory
Masako (Masa) Murakami passed away peacefully with family on January 29th, 2010 at the age of 90. She was a beloved relative with many friends and the last surviving owner of the former Higo Variety Store located within the International District of Seattle, Washington. Born in Seattle on October 22, 1919, Masa graduated from Franklin High School and worked in the family store for many years. During WWII, the family was forced to close the store and were interned at the Minidoka Relocation Center in southern Idaho. After the war, Higo Variety Store was reopened and remained open until Masa finally retired in 2004 at the age of 84. She had an engaging personality and enjoyed meeting and conversing with customers and friends each day at the store. She and her siblings enjoyed travel and over the years they visited all corners of the world. Masa is preceded in death by her father Sanzo, mother Matsuyo, sisters Chiyoko and Ayako, and brother Kazuichi. She is survived by the families of Kazuo Murakami, Shizuko Nobuyama, Hideo Harada, Toshi Terayama, and Sumi Matsumoto. Funeral InformationMemorial service will be held at 1 pm on February 20, 2010 at the Nisei Veteran’s Memorial Hall located at 1212 S King Street. Additional parking will be available at the Seattle Indian Center at 611 12th Ave S. (former Bailey Gazert School). Park on the south end of the lot. Donations InformationIn lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Nikkei Concerns, the Murakami Head and Neck Cancer Fund at the Virginia Mason Foundation, the Murakami Endowment for the Childhood Communications Center at Seattle Children’s Hospital, or a charity of your choice. |
