Women's History Month:Our History Is Our Strength

Women's History Month

March is Women’s History Month, and the theme for 2011 is Our History Is Our Strength.

According to the National Women’s History Project, “Our History is Our Strength pays tribute to the millions of women who helped create a better world for the times in which they lived as well as for future generations. Knowing the challenges these women faced, grappled with, and over-came can be an enormous source of strength to all of us. During today’s difficult times, Our History is Our Strength can serve as an important reminder to our nation that adversity can be overcome.”

Evergreen Washelli is proud to celebrate and recognize the lives lived of notable women in our care. We invite you to read about the lives of these women, and share your stories about women who made history.

Grieving By Gardening: A Harvest of Hope

Gardening

We often think of grieving as something that happens to us. But have you thought lately about how you grieve by doing? There may be some particular things that you’ve been doing that have been helpful and healing on your grief journey.

For instance, I remember talking to a woman after her mother died. She told me how worried she was about her father because he wasn’t expressing any grief. Her parents, she explained, were very close and always did everything together. Everyone always said they were like two peas in a pod. She could only imagine how devastated her father must be since her death, but he wasn’t talking about his feelings much at all, and he wasn’t showing a lot of emotions, either.

Prominent Geologist Henry Landes

Henry LandesRenowned geologist and husband of Seattle’s one and only female mayor, Henry Landes was born in Carroll County, Illinois, in 1868. He earned two B.A. Degrees, one from the University of Indiana and the other from Harvard, where he also earned his Masters Degree in 1893. While attending the University of Illinois, he met history and political science student Bertha Knight, whom he later married.

In 1895, the newlyweds moved to Seattle, where Henry would work as a professor of geology at the University of Washington. He went on to become the University of Washington Geology Department Chairman. In 1901, legislature established the State Geological Survey and chose Professor Landes as our first state geologist. From 1907 to 1908, he served as the first president of the Mountaineers, an outdoor recreation club. From 1914 to 1915, he served as president (acting) of the University of Washington.

Pre-Planning Options

PrePlanning Options

Many people choose to plan their cremation, burial or above ground mausoleum arrangements in advance. Preplanning, or pre-arrangement, allows YOU to determine how your final arrangements will be carried out, thus reducing family concerns and stress in the future. Not only will pre-planning your own service assist your family, it will guarantee that all of your wishes be granted as well. When you preplan, you have as much time as you need to make well-informed decisions and talk about these decisions with your family. In addition, preplanning can offer valuable financial benefits.

When you pre-arrange for yourself, you’ll personally choose the service options most desirable to you. At your request, one of our trained counselors will be happy to visit your home to discuss your pre-planning options. You can also stop by our facilities at anytime. Together, we’ll determine your specific needs, discuss your service and funding options, and handle the necessary paperwork.

Visit our online pre-planning guide to get started.
